Two TLSs from Gene Tunney to Deane Morrison, both one page, personal letterhead, 7.25 x 10.5. The earlier letter, September 24, 1962, finds Tunney sending Morrison a copy of his book, A Man Must Fight, and talking about his match with boxer Bob Martin: “My reward as winner was a Gillette Safety Razor with a dozen blades.” The second letter, February 14, 1966, concerns a “usual, normal” visit to a Boston hospital, the death of manager Jimmy Bronson, and the relationship between Martin and General John J. Pershing: “General Pershing did recommend that Bob Martin get a full military pension. I wrote a letter to the Veterans Administration requesting the same thing.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes and by two certificates of authenticity from JSA.
'Fighting' Bob Martin (1897-1978) was a heavyweight boxing champion who became the Heavyweight Champion of the American Expeditionary Forces and Inter-Allied Armies during World War I. He fought against Tunney in 1918, but lost in four rounds.
