A General Dynamics contractor model of the SM-65B Atlas prototype intercontinental ballistic missile developed for the United States Air Force. The model stands 15.5? in height and is set on a metal 6? diameter base with plate that reads: “General Dynamics, Astronautics, Atlas, USAF, ICBM.” In fine condition, with trivial scuffing to base.
The Convair SM-65B Atlas, or Atlas B, also designated X-12, was a prototype of the Atlas missile. First flown on July 19, 1958, the Atlas B was the first version of the Atlas rocket to use the stage and a half design with an operational sustainer engine and jettisonable booster engine section. Unlike later Atlas models, the Atlas B used explosive bolts to jettison the booster section.
