Description

On Silberstein's Causality: "You had written a little masterpiece, full of admirable doctrine, admirably illustrated and most lucidly expressed"

Two items associated with Ludwik Silberstein's book Causality: A Law of Nature or a Maxim of the Naturalist?:

Partly-printed document, signed "Harold Macmillan," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 13.5, July 26, 1932. Memorandum of agreement between "Dr. L. Silberstein…and Macmillan and Company, Limited," granting the right to "produce and publish the work Causality: A Law of Nature or a Maxim of the Naturalist?" Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) served as a director of his family's book publishing business before embarking on a career in politics; he served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1957 to 1963.

ALS signed "T. Percy Nunn," one page both sides, 7 x 9.75, Mira Mar Hotel letterhead, January 16, 1935. Handwritten letter to Dr. Silberstein, in part: "This is a letter which ought to have been written some months ago, when you very kindly sent me a copy of your little book on Causality…For a considerable time I did not find time or energy enough to read Causality; but at last I came to it. I then found that you had written a little masterpiece, full of admirable doctrine, admirably illustrated and most lucidly expressed. The main argument (about complete systems) was by no means new to me. As I read the earlier pages my memory was carried back to conversations in the sunlit days before the war, and particularly to a meeting of the Aristotelian Society, where you expounded your ideas in your own inimitable way." Thomas Percy Nunn (1870-1944) was a British educational theorist who served as president of the Mathematical Association from 1918-1919.

In overall fine condition, with some penciled transcriptions of Nunn's difficult-to-read handwriting.

From the collection of physicist Ludwik Siberstein.
