Description

Collection of papers from Ludwik Silberstein's education and early career in Europe, including a diploma from Heidelberg University, a Heidelberg University coursework booklet, a German patent, and four Italian documents. Includes:

Diploma from Heidelberg University, one page, 11.5 x 17.5, October 25, 1890, issued to "Ludovicum Silberstein" and signed by pro-rector Fritz Schöll, a philologist known for his editions of Plautus, Varro and Cicero.

Course registration book ("Anmeldungs-Buch") from Heidelberg University for October 1, 1890 to April 15, 1891, 8.75 x 11, issued to "Ludwig Silberstein," with the first page filled out with courses, and signed by the associated professors. Signers include the mathematician Leo Königsberger, physicist Georg Hermann Quincke, mathematician and Zionist Hermann Schapira, and philosopher Kuno Fischer.

German patent granted to Silberstein, eight pages, 8 x 11.5, September 24, 1895, for an "Elektrische Concentrationskette [Electric Concentration Chain]," complete with its seal and ribbon.

Italian freemasonry certificate, one page, 8 x 11.5, issued to Silberstein in 1911 by the Grande Oriente d'Italia [Grand Orient of Italy].

Partly-printed DS in Italian, signed by Minister of Education Guido Baccelli, one page, 9.5 x 14.5, June 30, 1899, certifying Dr. Silberstein to teach mathematical physics.

Manuscript DS in Italian, signed by Minister of Education Nunzio Nasi, one page, 10 x 15, April 14, 1903, certifying Dr. Silberstein to teach mathematical physics.

Testimonial letter in Italian from the University of Rome, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.25 x 12, March 3, 1909, in which a secretary records the recommendation of noted mathematician and physicist Vito Volterra, vouching for the quality and efficiency of Dr. Silberstein's work.

In overall very good to fine condition, with partial splits to folds of the Italian teaching certification documents.
