Description

Industrialist (1810-c. 1885) who co-founded the Ames Manufacturing Company, which produced arms, swords, and light artillery during the Civil War. ALS signed “Jas. T. Ames,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, with an attractive engraving of a view of Washington, DC letterhead, November 14, 1860. Letter to his daughter about his meetings in Washington, in part: "I live very oddly here this time. Willards is understood to be closed, but I have a nice room there and sleep in this big palace alone…I find my eating where I best can, so far I have had only 2 meals a day, a late breakfast and dinner just as it happens…Last night I had to wait up at the National 11 and did not get here till about 12 and this morning I had to start for the cars at 5 to meet Genl. James and this evening I go to Harpers Ferry." In fine condition.
