Career Army officer (1786-1866) who commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, the Second Seminole War, and Civil War. Two items: an ALS, one page, 4.5 x 6.75, August 12, 1850, to Joseph Gilbert Totten, Chief of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in part: "Please furnish to the Hon. T. R. Young, M.C. from Illinois, a copy or extracts of the field notes made by the Engineers on the route of the National Road from Terrehaute to Vandalia…for the use of the Atlantic & Mississippi Rail-Company"; and a Bank of the United States check, 5.5 x .25, filled out and signed by Scott, "Winfield Scott," payable to Mr. St. John for $12, April 24, 1830. In fine condition. Accompanied by three engraved portraits bearing facsimile signatures.
