American educator and author (1867-1963) remembered for her essays and best-selling books on ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Two items: a vintage glossy 4 x 5 photo of Hamilton at her desk, signed in the lower border in fountain pen, "Edith Hamilton, May 21, 1959"; and a TLS signed "Edith Hamilton," one page, 5.75 x 7.75, personal letterhead, May 22, 1959, in part: "I am happy to know what you and Mrs. Browne have liked my books and article in the Saturday Evening Post. As you asked me for a photograph, I enclose one that was taken recently in my sitting-room here in Washington." In fine condition, with surface impressions at the top of the photo from typed notations on the back.
