Description

Uncommon pairing of vintage matte-finish photographs commemorating the final days of U. S. Grant, affixed to the front and reverse of an off-white 15 x 13.25 photographic album page bearing informational captions below the respective photos. The front image, 11.5 x 9.75, depicts Grant's sick room, a bedroom located in banker Joseph Drexel's Adirondack cottage on the slopes of Mount McGregor, and the location Grant, on a $25,000 advance from Samuel L. Clemens, completed his autobiography just three days before succumbing to throat cancer. The photo on the reverse measures 12 x 9.5 and portrays the Walker Light Guards, Company B of the 1st Virginia Regiment, gathered outside the State Capitol prior to their departure to New York and their subsequent involvement in the funeral cortege of General Grant. Inherent to both photographs is a copyright in the lower right corner, "Copyright 1886 by the U.S. Inst. Photo. Co." In fine condition, with short tears and light stains to the borders.
