Description

Two items associated with the 1876 presidential election: an original 1.5 x 5.75 silk ribbon embroidered with a portrait of Hayes, reading: "Republican nomination 1876, For President R. B. Hayes, W. A. Wheeler for Vice President"; and a document signed by his opponent, "Samuel J. Tilden," one page, 8 x 11.5, August 25, 1875, appointing Oscar Thompson as a notary public for New York. The gold seal with blue ribbon affixed at center remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with staining, toning, and edge loss to the Tilden document. The 1876 election is remembered as one of the most controversial in American history: Tilden won the popular vote, and Hayes won the electoral vote only after the 'Compromise of 1877' awarded him 20 electoral votes in disputed Southern states for a 185-184 victory in the electoral college. In exchange, the outgoing President Grant withdrew federal troops from Florida, and President Hayes proceeded to withdraw federal troops from South Carolina and Louisiana.
