Two items: an ALS signed "Henry W. Longfellow," four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, November 4, 1854, to "Miss Bruce," in part: "The bad state of my eyes renders it impossible for me to comply with your request. Indeed, for some time past, I have been obliged to decline all applications of a like nature. I trust therefore that you will not think me either unkind or uncivil…It is difficult to give advice in such a delicate matter as Poetry; still I must say, the best course for you to follow, would be to publish in the Newspapers first, and afterwards, if you saw fit, collect your poems into a volume. This brings the poems at once to the eyes of thousands of readers…Moreover, I think an author can better judge of his own productions when he sees them in print"; and an ink signature, "Henry W. Longfellow, 1879," on an off-white 4.5 x 2.5 slip. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds to the letter, and a light block of toning and show-through from adhesive to corners of the signed slip.
