Description

United States Air Force fighter pilot (1920-1978) who flew combat missions during the Korean War and Vietnam War, and became the first African American to reach the rank of four-star general in the armed forces. Three items signed by James: a vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of the pilot in front of his jet, signed and inscribed in black felt tip, "To the Brownes, All the best, Daniel James, Jr., Col. USAF"; a TLS signed "Chappie," one page, 7 x 8, Assistant Secretary of Defense letterhead, January 28, 1971, in part: "With all of the hostility towards the military beamed by a vociferous few these days, it is always heartwarming to hear from people such as you"; and a typescript of a speech on "Americanism," five pages, 8 x 10.5, signed on the last page in black ballpoint by James. In very good to fine condition, with creasing to the photo.
