Description

Partly-printed DS, one page, 5.25 x 7.75, December 14, 1809. Document issued by the collector of the port of New York, certifying that "Gilbert Saltonstall, an American Seaman, aged Nineteen Years, or thereabouts, of the Height of Five Feet 7 & 1/2 Inches, Light Hair, Light Complexion, has a small scar on his right thigh, a large pockmark on his forehead, and was born in the City, County & State of New York, has this Day produced to me Proof, in the Manner directed by the Act, entitled, 'An Act for the Relief and Protection of American Seamen;' and, pursuant to the said Act, I do hereby certify, That the said Gilbert Saltonstall is a Citizen of the United States of America." A white paper "New York Custom House" seal is affixed to the lower left. In very good condition, with overall creasing and staining, and old tape to the reverse of the intersecting folds.
