Description

Composer and critic (1896-1989) who is perhaps best remembered for his two operas written with Gertrude Stein, Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All. Two items: a glossy 4.25 x 6 postcard photo of Virgil Thomson posing against a large window in 1949, signed in black ink, "Warmly greetings from, Virgil Thomson, NYC"; and a souvenir typescript from his personal memoirs, one page, 8.5 x 11, signed below in black ballpoint by Thomson, with a portion of the excerpt reading: "If it is the relation of music to words that makes opera in two senses moving, it is the relation of instrumental accompaniment to vocal line that makes an opera resemble its epoch." In overall very good to fine condition, with postal impressions and a blue stain to the photo.
