Three letters by Mumford, including two ALSs and one TLS: the first ALS is one page, May 18, 1929, to "Mr. Holloway," in part: "It was only after I had finished with my study of Melville that I realized how complementary their work was, Whitman's & Melville's; and for a while In was half-tempted to make this the theme of my next book"; the second ALS is one page both sides, April 12, 1952, to "Mr. Barnard," in part: "I have more than an inkling of the heavy burden you took on your shoulders. I went through the same experience myself in endorsing to awaken the American people to the need for a sane policy of restraint on the atomic bomb & can share your sense of frustration"; and the TLS is one page both sides, March 26, 1952, to "Mr. Barnard," about the campaign to elect Justice William O. Douglas as president, in part: "The fact that Douglas didn't get even MacArthur's write-in vote in the recent primaries convinced me that our 'movement' is a very select one, and apart from such encouragement as we might get from the very people who would kill the movement—the communists and near-communists, working for very different reasons—there was no spontaneous grass roots backing."
