D., Falmouth, Virginia" bookplate is affixed inside the cover. Capt. Jonathan Carver's account of his travels along the Mississippi River through present-day Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa was first published in 1778; it describes the geography and fauna of the these 'northwest' regions of North America, as well as a "concise history of the genius, manners, and customs of the Indians."
