Two flown covers carried on flights by USAF astronauts who never went to space, both with cachets filled out with information on the flights, signed by the respective pilots: one flown on a T-39A at Wright Patterson AFB on March 5, 1964 by Edward J. Dwight, Jr., during a flight "to test ability of pilot to control vehicle"; and one carried on a KC-135 at Wright Patterson AFB on November 15, 1968 by Dick Lawyer, for a "Zero 'G' Tunnel Transfer Test." In overall fine condition.
Ed Dwight (born 1933) was the first black test pilot to be trained as an astronaut; his selection as the first African-American astronaut trainee garnered international media attention. He resigned from the Air Force in 1966.
Richard Lawyer (1932-2005) was trained for the USAF Manned Orbital Laboratory, a program canceled before any of its crews went into space.
