Description

Two items related to the Civil War:

[Abraham Lincoln] - Manuscript
Unsigned handwritten manuscript concerning Lincoln's death, one page, 7.5 x 9.75, no date but circa 1867. In part: "Alas—but two years have passed since these words were written & since then what a history! Now, while the air of the whole country is heavy with tolling of funeral bells, when every flag is at half mast, & the heart of the nation is shaken, by the sound of that sad train that is passing with mournful meaning from city to city, we look back in the history of the good & just man whom God has taken, & think that our good words spoken of him have been all too few & cold. When the patient hard working father dies, the children know for the first time what he was worth. Within the last two years events have written for our President a solemn & glorious history, that will preserve his name in everlasting remembrances." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, creasing, and a small hole to the upper left corner.

Philip H. Sheridan - ALS
ALS signed "Sheridan," one page both sides, 5 x 7.75, January 25, 1872. Letter to Mr. Comstock, in full: "With great pleasure I enclose the autograph asked for. I hope we may have the pleasure of seeing you over this way soon. With kind regards to Mrs. Comstock and yourself." In very good condition, with horizontal mailing fold touching the tip of one letter of the signature, uniform blocks of irregular toning, rusty paperclip marks and a red pencil notation to upper left corner, and some adhesive remnants to reverse.
