The first deaf-blind American child (1829 -1889) to gain a significant education in the English language. Bridgman was educated at the Perkins Institution for the Blind under the direction of Samuel Gridley Howe, and gained celebrity status when Charles Dickens met her during his 1842 American tour and wrote about her accomplishments in his American Notes. Two items: an AQS in pencil, “Thou art the strength of my life. Laura D. Bridgman, Hanover, NH,” on an off-white 4.75 x 2.25 lightly lined slip, matted with an image to an overall size of 17 x 14; and a pencil signature, “Laura D. Bridgman,” on an off-white 3.5 x 1.5 slip, matted with an image to an overall size of 8 x 11. In overall fine condition.
