Civil War-era medical kit owned by John Campbell, who was commissioned as a surgeon into the Ohio 178th Infantry in September 1864. The kit is comprised of a leather wrap case holding a series of 15 medical instruments, as well as a set of utensils, eyeglasses with original lenses, black wooden handle, and circular metal case. The detached flap retains its manufacturer's label, reading: "R. Goulding…Surgical Instrument Makers, New York." All are displayed in a 16 x 12 case. Also includes a 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Campbell by Watson's Gallery of Cincinnati, signed and inscribed on the reverse, "Yours Truly, J. H. Campbell." In overall very good condition. A fascinating set of Civil War medical instruments.
