Austrian-born illustrator (1894-1969) who left Germany to avoid a commission from Hermann Goring glorifying the Third Reich, claiming that she had a commitment to complete drawings of a bridge in Denmark. She illustrated over fifty books during her career and was part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 'American Industry at War' exhibit in 1943. Fantastic sketch of the scenic seaport at Esbjerg, Denmark, accomplished in graphite and colored pencil by Rethi on an off-white 19 x 13 sheet, signed in the lower right corner in pencil, "Lili Rethi." The detailed sketch wonderfully renders the boats in the harbor and onlookers on the docks. Matted and framed to an overall size of 29 x 24. In fine condition.
