Description

Substantial artifacts from Lord Nelson’s flagship

Fantastic collection of five wooden fragments recovered during the restoration of Horatio Nelson's flagship, the HMS Victory, ranging in size from 1 x .5 x .25 to 4.5 x 2.5 x 1, including a substantial fragment with a finely finished beveled top, likely a piece of trim or moulding. Contained within a Georgian Sheffield-silver box, 5 x 3.25 x 1.5, featuring an 1805 silver crown affixed to the top bearing a bust profile of George III. A slip affixed inside the cover of the box bears an ink notation reading, “Oak from HMS Victory, 1805. October 1925"; the latter date may indicate when these fragments were acquired from the Society of Nautical Research, which sold off obsolete parts of the ship in order to fund its restoration. In overall fine condition. Provenance: Society for Nautical Research; obtained by the War Museum from a prominent British naval family collection, which had additionally featured relics from the noted Benjamin Hill Collection.
