Description

William Seward and DeWitt Cilnton

Seward (1801–1872) was an American statesman who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. Clinton (1769–1828) was an American politician who served as senator and who, as governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. Two documents, both measuring 15.5 x 9.75. One signed “William H. Seward,” dated April 9, 1839, appointing James Grant to be the Quarter Master of the 7th Division of Infantry; the other, signed “Dewit Clinton,” dated August 20, 1827, appointing Alexander Grant to be Paymaster of the 30th Brigade of Infantry. In very good condition, with a few small separations and edge tears to intersecting folds, one passing through a single letter of Clinton’s signature, scattered toning, and light show-through from printing on reverse. RR Auction COA.
