Description

The persecuted ‘spy’ weighs in on Nixon, mentioning the “adversary encounters such as I had with him in 1948”

American lawyer, government official, author, and lecturer (1904–1996), famously accused of being a Soviet spy in 1948 and convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950. Three ALSs, each one page, 7.25 x 10.5 and 8.5 x 11, dated between 1972 and 1977. The most interesting, from 1974, in part: “You have certainly been industrious in your correspondence about Mr. Nixon. I’m sorry that all I really know about him comes from public sources…I’ve never even had occasion to shake hands with him. The impression one gets in adversary encounters such as I had with him in 1948 is hardly a basis for a personal opinion of any weight…I assume that you are familiar with the large number of books about Mr. Nixon that have already appeared. I have been much impressed by Lurie’s ‘Running with Richard Nixon’ and Garry Wills’s ‘Nixon Agonistes.’” The other two letters are general responses. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by two of the original mailing envelopes, both filled out in Hiss’s hand. RR Auction COA.
