William Thornton

Architect (1759–1828) who designed the US Capitol and later served as the first superintendent of the Patent Office. Scarce manuscript DS, two pages both sides, 8 x 13, October 1807. Indenture agreement between Cornelius McDermott Roe and Catherine Anderson for two lots of land in Baltimore City “fronting on D. Street” with the rent being thirty dollars. Signed at the conclusion by Thornton. In very good condition, with some repairs and reinforcement to intersecting folds, scattered toning, a few pinhole size areas of paper loss, and light show-through from text on opposite sides.
