“You are appointed a cadet in the service of the United States”

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. DS, signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8 x 9.75, July 23, 1819. Secretary of War Calhoun informs W. Kingsbury of his acceptance to West Point. In part: “You are appointed a cadet in the service of the United States—You will immediately notify this Department of your acceptance or non-acceptance: In case of the former, you will repair to West Point.” In good to very good condition, with heavy overall foxing and staining.
