American astronomer (1885–1972) who measured the size of the galaxy, finding it was far bigger than previously thought. Book plate of a comet, titled “Fig. 1. Nov 15, 1908,” 10 x 6, signed and inscribed in black ink starting in the light portion of the comet’s tail, “Harlow Shapley, by suggestion of Marion Colvin Deane, February 1930.” In very good condition, with scattered foxing to borders and poor contrast to inscription and date.
