American naval admiral (1806–1863) who commanded the Mississippi River Squadron during the Civil War. After his promotion to rear admiral, Foote was on his way to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron when he died en route on June 26, 1863. War-dated ALS signed “A. H. Foote,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, September 10, 1862. Letter to Walter S. Griffith. In part: “Your kind letter of the 9th instant specifying the time, place and arrangements for the presentation of the sword with which my friends in Brooklyn propose honoring me has been received.” In fine condition.
