Attorney general during the Civil War (1793–1869). AQS on an off-white 4.5 x 4.5 slip affixed to an identical size card. In full: “The Union forever! With it, we have long lived free & strong; without it, we can have neither liberty nor strength.” Signed at the conclusion, “Edw. Bates, Oct. 26, 1864.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, ink notation below signature, and a couple of stray ink marks. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite.
