War of 1812: John Rodgers

Commodore in the United States Navy (1772–1838) who fired the first shot of the War of 1812 aboard his flagship, the USS President. LS, one page, 8 x 10, September 15, 1834. Letter to W. G. B. Wilson of Baltimore regarding shipments of whiskey. In full: “The Commissioners will inform you whether any whiskey will be required under your contract at Norfolk or Washington so soon as the Board determine what shipments are to be made, which will probably be in eight or ten days.” Reverse of second adjoined page is also free franked by Rodgers. Intersecting folds, one vertical fold through the signature, scattered wrinkling, pencil collector’s notation to the bottom, and two tears to the adjoining docketed page, otherwise fine condition.
