Commodore in the United States Navy (1783–1848) known for serving with William Bainbridge during the War of 1812 and his later expeditions to Asia in the 1840s, during which he negotiated the first treaty between the US and China. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9.75, February 28, 1829. Letter to Senator L. W. Tazwell of Virgina, recommending the appointment of General Cadwalader as Collector at the Port of Philadelphia, with a brief note about his distaste for international discovery voyages at the end. In part: “I have seen today a letter from a gentleman...that Gen. Cadwalader would apply for the collector of this port, it being understood that the present incumbent will not be permitted to continue. General Cadwalader is at present in your county, but was he ever here, I am quite sure he would not make any application. His friends however are extremely anxious that he should receive this appointment, not mainly for attachment to him, but for...his superior fitness to that of any other man in this community & of the superiority of his claims...to that of any other individual that could be solicited. It is certain that this appointment would be…acceptable to all…As I was...inimical to the projected Discovery Voyage I am not sorry that the project has been put down by the Senate. If the government must go in search of discoveries, our own continent is I think, the proper field.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered toning, show-through from text, a few dings and light paper loss to the left edge, paperclip impression to the top, and a few pencil notations to the upper left.
