Description

“I stress a Principle, and often say that it is MY aim to stamp the Spirit of MY Mind of Righteousness, Justice and Truth in the hearts of the people that they may be lifted up from their sins”

Black religious leader whose Peace Mission sect demanded worship of him as God incarnate and communal celibate living. TLS signed “Rev. M. J. Divine,” one page, 8.5 x 11, The USA North-Eastern Local Addresses of Rev. M. J. Divine, New York letterhead, February 25, 1943. Father Divine writes to John H. Ball, in part: “While I AM a Leader of men, I do not present Personality to the world, nor advance Myself for the consideration of the people; I stress a Principle, and often say that it is MY aim to stamp the Spirit of MY Mind of Righteousness, Justice and Truth in the hearts of the people that they may be lifted up from their sins. If giving MY signature would benefit anyone, I would do so willingly, but as it is given: ‘Written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in the tables of stone, but in the fleshy tables of the heart.’ Thus I would that you might be as this leaves ME, as I AM Well, Healthy, Joyful, Peaceful, Lively, Loving, Successful, Prosperous and Happy in Spirit, Body and Mind and in every organ, muscle, sinew, joint, limb, vein and bone and even in every atom, fibre and cell of MY Bodily Form.” In fine condition, with light creasing. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. RRAuction COA.
