Lorenzo Thomas

Thomas served in campaigns against the Florida Seminoles and was chief of staff to Winfield Scott in the Mexican War. He was adjutant general with rank of brigadier general in the Union army but Stanton banished him from Washington in 1863 to organize colored regiments. Two endorsements, signed “L. Thomas Act. Adj. Genl,” on the reverse of an address leaf to “Brig. Genl. R. Jones,” 10 x 8, one dated December 12, 1845, regarding the “Regimental Recruiting Service,” the second on the next panel, dated December 23, 1845, reads, in part: “The Colonel of the 4th Artillery can do as he pleases with reference to the enlistment of this man…he is to be assigned to Capt. Washington’s company.” In very good condition, with partial separations along vertical folds, scattered toning, a couple areas of paper loss from removal of seal, and a couple small notations. Accompanied by a December 10, 1845, ALS from Captain Washington to General Jones. RRAuction COA.
