American physician and scientist (1805-1880) who was involved in the controversy over who first discovered the anesthetic properties of ether. ALS, one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, February 8, 1858. Brief letter to a collector. In full: "In accordance with your request I send you my signature, as an autograph." Letter is affixed to a slightly larger beige sheet, with a clipped red wax seal affixed to bottom of letter, presumably from the mailing envelope.
