Description

George W. Goethals

Army officer and civil engineer (1858–1928) appointed by Theodore Roosevelt to oversee the construction of the Panama Canal. TLS signed "G. W. Goethals," one page, 8 x 10.5, U. S. Engineer Office letterhead, June 15, 1901. Letter to a Customs official. In part, "The most important commercial statistics desired are those covering the commerce to and from Vineyard Haven Harbor. It would, however, be of advantage to have a separate statement of commerce arriving and leaving." Slightly fuzzy appearance to signature, some light toning and soiling, tear to left side, pencil notation to bottom edge, and several noticeable creases, not affecting signature, otherwise very good condition.
