Description

Rossetti mentions 'Blessed Damozel' and laments the cost of framing his works: "prices here can only be stood when one gets a big haul for one's picture"

Prominent British painter and writer (1828–1882) who was one of the founders and central figures of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. ALS signed 'D. G. Rossetti,' four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, February 13, 1879. Rossetti writes Charles Rowley, discussing the framing of drarwings, the costs involved, and references ‘Blessed Damozel.’ In part: 'The drawing will go to Manchester tomorrow. I am not pasting it up at back, since you talk of changing the glass, but the present one seems all right. You will note the necessity of care in handling it unframed. These drawings are very difficult to set successfully. I forget if you saw the picture I did for Mr. Graham from the ‘Blessed Damozel’ a poem of my own. This head is the study for the principal head in the picture. I spoke some time ago to Shields…to frame for me a number of drawings—probably some 40 or so—which I should tackle & finish if they were only framed…I shd. never want plate glass but best cystal sheet…The frame makers’ prices here can only be stood when one gets a big haul for one’s picture.' In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
