Nobel Prize–winning German physicist (1858–1947) who pioneered the understanding of quantum theory. ALS in German, signed 'Dr. M. Planck,' one page, 5.75 x 7, personal letterhead, June 26, 1927. Letter to the Berliner. In part (translated): 'To my regret it is not possible for me, now, or in the near future, to comply with your request for an article explaining the Quantum Theory in layman’s terms. At present I am taken completely taken up with projects of different kinds.' In fine condition, with a postal cancellation to top right corner, and a light paperclip impression to top edge.

The brilliant physicist minces no words here as he declines a request to explain quantum theory or quantum mechanics, a complex scientific field that can perplex even many experts in other fields. In a paper published in 1900, Planck attempted to explain certain phenomena in the world around him that classic physics could not. He deduced the relationship between the energy and the frequency of radiation and reasoned that the energy emitted by a resonator could only take on discrete values, or quanta. His work ultimately helped scientists explain discrepancies between observed phenomena and classical theory...but at such at advanced level that even Planck, who formulated the idea, could not simplify the ideas due to its complexity and his distraction with other projects.
