Edwin M. Stanton

American politician (1814–1869) who served as secretary of war in the cabinets of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Partly-printed DS, one page, 7.75 x 10, November 8, 1862. In part: 'You are hereby informed that the President of the United States has re-apppointed you, for meritorious service in Western Virginia, a Brigadier General of Volunteers in the service of the United States.' Signed at the bottom by Stanton. Countersigned by Brigadier General Joseph J. Reynolds. Partial splitting along the folds, missing upper right corner, and a bit of soiling, otherwise fine condition.
