Description

Hancock presents a First Class Companion MOLLUS document

Partly-printed DS, signed “Winf. St. Hancock,” one page, 23 x 18, October 13, 1883. Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States certificate issued to Captain and Brevet Major Francis James Bakewell of Company I of the 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry “as a Companion of the First Class.” Signed at the conclusion by Hancock, and countersigned by John P. Nicholson. In fine condition, with small pencil notation to bottom edge, and some scattered light border toning and soiling. The orange seal is crisp and intact. Hancock served as the Legion’s second Commander-in-Chief from 1879 to 1876. An attractive document from an organization founded right after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Members of the first class were officers who had fought in the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States in the suppression of the Rebellion. RRAuction COA.
