DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, April 17, 1944. An assignment of United States copyright for the songs ‘Daisy’ from the Broadway musicals Have a Heart and ‘Rolled Into One’ from Oh Boy! In part: “In consideration of the sum of One Dollar and other good and valuable consideration to the undersigned, Jerome Kern…does hereby assign, transfer and set over unto T. B. Harms Company the renewal copyrights for the United States.” Signed by Kerns at the conclusion. He has also initialed a deleted passage. The document is affixed to its original 8.5 x 12.5 “Assignment of Copyright” blue paper jacket; stapled to the left side of the page is an 8 x 4 card entitled “Copyright Office of the United States of America The Library of Congress” acknowledging assignment of the copyright, with the its bright red seal and blue ribbons attached. A few inconsequential light stains, otherwise fine condition.
Have a Heart, for which Kern wrote the music, opened in New York City in 1917 and became a solid success, particularly with the musical’s touring company. Oh, Boy! was another 1917 musical, opening in February 1917 at the Princess Theatre and transferring to the Casino Theatre in November 1917 to finish its Broadway run of 463 performances. As copyright renewals are necessary after 27 years, Kern here satisfies that standard legal obligation at a time that he was at the pinnacle of fame as a Hollywod composer. RRAuction COA.
