Description

Dame Myra Hess

British pianist (1890–1965) who, during World War II, boosted the morale of the British people by organizing a series of lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery, playing in many herself. Two items: ALS, one page, 6 x 9.25, Bismarck Hotel Chicago stationery, January 30, 1948. Hess responds to a fan who apparently lost her husband during World War II. In part: “I am so grateful that my music gave you pleasure—as I know your life had been hard without your beloved husband. Please let us meet when I come to Boston again, next season.”; and a fountain pen signature and inscription, “To dearest Mrs. Merriman with my love Myra Hess. In the National Gallery London,” on the reverse of a photo postcard from one of her concerts. In very good condition, with moderate creasing, wrinkling and staining to the letter; the postcard is matted and framed to an overall size of 10 x 8.5 with both sides visible and old tape securing the signature side to the mat, covering the word “London.” RRAuction COA.
