Countee Cullen

African-American poet (1903–1946) who came to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance. ALS, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, November 20, 1937. Letter to an admirer. In part: “I am always happy when my poems have earned a new friend. Unfortunately I am unable to comply with your request for a photograph, as I have not been photographed for at least five years.” In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, a few creases, and scattered toning and soiling, mainly from adhesive remnants on reverse.
