American military pilot (1929–1977) who attained wordwide notoriety in 1960 when the U-2 spy plane he was piloting was shot down over the Soviet Union, in one of the most acutely embarrassing incidents of the Eisenhower administration. Powers was killed in 1977 when the news helicopter he was flying ran out of fuel and crashed a few miles from the airport. A FDC signed in black felt tip, “Francis Gary Powers,” tipped into the second free-end page of The U-2 Affair by David Wise and Thomas B. Ross. First edition, first printing. NY: Random House, 1966. Attached to the third free-end page, also with corner mounts, is a 3.5 x 2.5 card signed in blue ballpoint, “Happy Anniversary Darling, Love, Gary” that had been sent with a dozen roses to his wife. Also signed in ink on the first free-end page by both authors and Clarence L. Johnson, designer of the U-2 plane (who has also signed on an interior page), and also signed on an interior page depicting their respective images by Secretary of State Christian Herter, CIA Director Allen W. Dulles, Barbara Moore Powers, Alexander W. Parker, and Frank W. Powers. In very good condition, with light toning to the pages, a mild wear to the front and back boards, an owner’s bookplate affixed to the front board, and scattered soiling. RRAuction COA.
