Months before his death, Perry collects his pay

American military officer (1785-1819) who served in the War of 1812 and earned the title “Hero of Lake Erie” for leading American forces in a decisive naval victory at the Battle of Lake Erie. DS, signed “O. H. Perry,” one page, 6.5 x 2.5, January 4, 1819. A receipt reading, “Recd of Clement S. Huntt Purser Three Hundred Dollars on Account of my pay & Sub-Sistence.” Matted with a portrait to an overall size of 11.75 x 14.75. In fine condition, with mild toning and scattering soiling, some of which touches the end of his signature. Later that year, Perry would negotiate a treaty for the pirate-plagued waters off Venezuela. Perry succeeded in negotiating a favorable treaty, but contracted yellow fever and died August 23, 1819.
