Union general (1818-1885) best remembered for leading the losing Union forces in the First Battle of Bull Run. Later he was in charge of the army which defended Washington. War-dated endorsement, signed “Irvin McDowell, Maj. Genl Cmr 3rd A.C.U.V,” written in another hand, “Respectfully transmitted to Army Headqrs,” and dated August 1, 1862, clipped from a larger document.
