Description

Law partner recounts Lincoln’s life

ALS signed “W. H. Herndon,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, Springfield, Ill. letterhead, December 7, 1883. In part: “Enclosed you will find a printed lecture of mine, about 1873, to a large and intelligent audience. It will be found in Damon’s [?] Life of Lincoln p. 492. It was in answer to this Abbott letter; and the enclosed lecture was in answer to Reed’s lecture. I never said directly or indirectly that Mr. Marsham wrote the piece. What I claim is that Mr. Marsham talked and I wrote down the enclosed myself…In quite all cases I took notes of the interview at the time and Mr. Stuart does not deny the substantive truth of my notes…I sold my notes re of Lincoln’s life to St [?] who will unite the life of Lincoln using my materials. 3rd, A Mr. Edwards wrote that Reed and Edwards signed - a letter to Reed and published in the Scribner article, stating that Mr. Lincoln changed his views somewhat before he left…and which friend wrote me a letter stating that Mr. Edwards on his examination found not quite so strong as orthodox as he was in his letter…In this I may be wrong…I was prejudiced in behalf of Mr. Lincoln and took down nothing but was true. My notes are honestly taken down. I live by them, and will die by them.” In fine condition with a vertical fold through a letter of the signature, scattered light toning and a separation at the fold. RRAuction COA.
