American writer and diplomat (1819–1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as minister to the court of Spain. Ink signature, “Yours very truly, J. R. Lowell 29th Dec., 1871,” on an off-white 4.5 x 2.75 slip. Slip appears to be affixed to an identical size card. Cloth matted and framed with a color portrait, to an overall size of 11.5 x 14.5. The frame back bears the printed label and red wax seal of noted autograph dealer Charles Hamilton. In fine condition, with a horizontal fold under signature, and a bit of scattered light toning.
