President of the Reichsbank in the Weimar Republic (1877–1970) and Reich Minister of Economics who played an instrumental role in Germany’s economic recovery between the wars. After denouncing anti-Semitic practices, calling for cutbacks in military spending, and allegedly participating in a plot to assassinate Hitler, he was dismissed from his position and placed in a concentration camp. Tried at Nuremburg, he was acquitted and later wrote a number of books. AQS, signed “Hjalmar Schacht, 1970,” on an off-white sheet of his 6 x 8.25 personal stationery.
