Description

“I must say the fact remains that China needs reassurance of our friendship and needs it now”

TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, East and West Association letterhead, January 21, 1943. Letter to Miss Tremaine with interesting commentary on the significance of American and Chinese relationship. In part: “The time has come when we must give new encouragement to China, our ally. We must face the fact that as yet our leaders have not given China reassurance as to her place as an equal partner in the war or in the peace. Britain and the United States are the chief partners, with Russia a third, and China only a fourth. It is true, as I know from very direct sources indeed, that China has not been given her equal share in military councils, nor has she been given anything like her due share in war materials. She is beginning to be doubtful of her future positions with us. Without presuming to criticise, I must say the fact remains that China needs reassurance of our friendship and needs it now. That reassurance must come from the American people themselves somehow.” In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
