“If I had an autograph of President Lincoln with me I would send it”

Chase was U.S. Secretary of the Treasury for the first three years of Abraham Lincoln's term, after which Lincoln appointed him to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In that role Chase presided over the 1868 impeachment trial of president Andrew Johnson. ALS signed “S. P. Chase,” one page, 5.25 x 7.25, July 13, 1865. Letter to a gentleman seeking a signature of Abraham Lincoln. In part: “If I had an autograph of President Lincoln with me I would send it with pleasure, but I have not…You ask…advice…I say then to you fear no displeasure than that of God, seek no favor incompatible with his favor & let no day close after your day’s work is done.” In very good condition, with mounting remnants along vertical edges, some light creasing and a tear to body of letter, affecting several lines of text.
