ALS, two pages, 4.75 x 7.75, Union League Club, Chicago letterhead, May 7, 1906. When visiting Chicago in 1906, science fiction guru H.G. Wells (1866-1946) opined that the Windy City was “smoky, vast, and undisciplined.” Yet, in his work published that same year titled, The Future in America, Wells expressed the possibility of a “more beautiful age” for the city. An interesting connection to Wells’ evolving sentiment about the Midwest locale is offered in this letter written by the famed author while he visited Chicago in 1906. In part, Wells writes to an unnamed individual: “The letter to ‘London’ ought to have reached me. I’ve had on previous occasions such addresses as ‘H.G. Wells, Homme des Lettres, Londres’ get to me all right. You see I’ve gone on. I may be in New York again between the 13th & the 19th but my movements are very uncertain …” The message exhibits mild toning and handling wear, but is otherwise in fine condition. RRAuction COA.
